Tungsten carbide (WC/W2C) materials, often in a cobalt matrix, offer optimal wear protection. For enhanced corrosion resistance, we recommend a matrix of nickel-cobalt-chromium (NiCoCr) or cobalt-chromium-nickel (CoCrNi).
If your application demands service temperatures above 500°C (930°F), chromium carbide (Cr3C2) materials, generally with varying amounts of a nickel-chromium matrix, are recommended. Higher matrix percentages yield coatings with improved ductility, impacting and fretting resistance, while lower percentages provide greater hardness, resulting in superior abrasion and wear resistance.
Consider tungsten titanium carbide (WTiC) as a potential replacement for tungsten carbide. WTiC is less dense, making it technique-independent for more reliable processing, and its lower cost and unique properties make it suitable for various applications.
Material Optimization Through Manufacturing:
Our manufacturing processes directly influence the service and spray properties of our materials. Agglomerated and sintered carbides offer better microhardness and coating deposition efficiency compared to fused and crushed carbides. Further powder densification enhances deposition efficiencies, and our optimization procedures save time and money on production, enhancing surface service life.
We Manufacture Various Carbide Morphologies:
Fused tungsten carbides
Monocrystalline tungsten carbides in a wide range of sizes
Sintered and crushed carbides
Spherical (densified) carbides
Explore our carbide portfolio for excellent alternatives to hard chromium plating, especially for landing gears, hydraulic rods, and oil field equipment.
The benefits include:
Faster application
Tailored material for the operating environment
Coatings grindable to high surface finishes and tight tolerances
Smooth "as-sprayed" surfaces often usable without additional machining
For components challenging or costly to machine, we offer very fine carbide materials. These provide smooth "as-sprayed" surface finishes, requiring minimal or no machining. For example, corrugating rolls in the paper industry demand an abrasion-resistant surface with a geometry prohibitively expensive to machine. Consult with our material scientists for specific application requirements.
